Today’s systems need to be developed for more than one application, catering to several needs and designed to perform under several scenarios as part of one, and usually multiple, super-systems. A fighter aircraft for example is designed to operate under different environments along with different mission scenarios that will in turn evolve across the lifecycle. To ensure a holistic design of such systems that will continue to provide utility through their lifecycle requires an appreciation of all potential operational scenarios and how their varying operational environments and missions will impact design requirements. While designing such systems, the organisations need to have an appreciation for how these varying operational environments and mission scenarios impact design requirements, functionality and constraints at the same time!
This holistic perspective of understanding operational scenarios while considering the “system of interest” as black box, and being cognizant of variation in stakeholder needs makes it possible to design, build, deliver and sustain robust systems, that will not only meet current requirements but will continue to provide capable utility through evolving operational needs and rapidly changing technology.

JB is a Systems professional with a wealth of experience over 30 years across multi-national organisations in technical and strategic leadership roles delivering complex capabilities across defence and civil sectors. He is a passionate advocate and educator in the utilisation of Systems approaches, Modelling and Simulation as foundational pillars for understanding and resolving complexities in work and life and their application in the efficient and effective engineering of systems for a better and safer world.
He is the current Technical Director of SESA (INCOS’s Australian Chapter), and an elected co-chair of the Australian Defence Force Synthetic Environment Working Group (SEWG). He was an elected member of the Simulation Australasia Board, a founding member and past Chair of SimAusts’ Professional Development committee and was the Convenor of the SimAust SimTecT conferences from 2006 to 2008.
JB is currently casually contracting as Principal Systems Engineer to Shoal Group, while working towards a PhD at the University of Adelaide under an Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship, with Shoal Group as the industry partner, focusing on the digital transformation of systems engineering.
He has a BE (Aerospace Engineering) and a BSc (Computer Science) from UNSW, and a Master’s in Systems Engineering from UNSW@ADFA.
Mudit Mittal is the Technology Director at BlueKei Solutions. He has over 13 years of industry experience spread across Embedded Systems Development, Network Systems Engineering, Model Based Systems Engineering, Modeling and Simulation, and competency development for Enterprise. In October 2020, Mudit Mittal joined BlueKei Solutions as Technology Director. At BlueKei he has been active in conducting trainings for various organizations and solving customer problems by consulting them on Systems Engineering adoption and applying SE principles to develop custom framework which fit within their constraints.
Mudit has worked with John Deere, where he was responsible for Systems Engineering Competency development and MBSE adoption. He was working as a Subject Matter Expert, defining requirements and developing framework to adopt and scale MBSE tools and practices for the Enterprise. He has been very active in developing and delivering trainings at scale around MBSE and Systems Engineering. He has also worked with Tata Motors, and Actia India as an Embedded Software Engineer developing Embedded Systems and Innovation projects. Mudit is passionate about Systems Engineering, and about the overall Digital Transformation.
He has a Masters Certificate in Systems Design and Management from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. He has been actively associated with INCOSE currently serving as India Chapter President, and co-chair for the INCOSE India MBSE Local Working Group.
